Birth & Early Life
Dina and her twin sister, Toosy, were born in Cairo, Egypt, on June 6, 1989. Donia Torkia is her real name, and she is half English and half Egyptian. Hassan and Yoosuf are her two brothers. Dina was given the name “Noor” at first.
Her mother taught English at the same primary school where she attended. Dina’s family relocated to London when she was seven years old. Her father worked for a company in Egypt before becoming a business owner in London. He established a trading business there, selling Egyptian products to Londoners who were drawn to Egypt’s exotic appeal.
Dina attended ‘Horsenden Primary School’ in Greenford, England. She used to play football and rugby before she started wearing the ‘hijab.’ Dina then went to a school called ‘The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls.’ Dina returned to Cairo after the birth of her brother, Hassan. Dina and her sister were unable to adjust to the environment at their school and returned to London.
Her family couldn’t afford to live in London, so they relocated to Cardiff. Dina went to ‘Cathays High School’ there. History and textiles were her favorite subjects. She also founded her own clothing line, ‘Unleaded.’ Dina chose the sixth form after high school and studied English literature, business studies, and product design for her A-levels. She later went on to study psychology as well.
Dina’s first job after college was at a mobile network call center. She changed multiple call-center jobs in a year and a half. Dina began writing fashion blogs at the same time, which helped shape her career as a fashion blogger.
Dina then went to ‘Cardiff University,’ where she studied Hebrew and Islamic studies. After a year, she dropped out. She quickly returned to call-center work. Dina returned to university and enrolled in the English teaching module (teaching English to foreigners). She veered off course halfway through.
Dina met her future husband, Sid Kaan, at university. He’d assist Dina with her projects. Sid works as a graphic designer. Dina later returned to Egypt, where she got a teaching job while also working as a fashion designer. She returned to the UK a few months later and married Sid. They tied the knot in 2013. Hana, Dina’s daughter, was born in October 2015. Dina gave birth to a son in July 2018.
Dina began her fashion blogging career after dropping out of college in 2011. She had, however, started writing fashion blogs a year before. She felt compelled to improve the fashion sense of “hijabi” women. This sparked the idea to create clothing for Muslim women who wear the “hijab” and want to look fashionable without exposing too much skin.
Dina Tokio, her first ‘YouTube’ channel, debuted in April 2011. The channel primarily features makeup tutorials and fashion vlogs geared toward “hijabi” women. Dina became the UK’s first successful “hijabi” fashion vlogger through this channel. Through her vlogs, she also promotes women’s empowerment. ‘THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LIPSTICK IN THE WORLD,’ ‘TURBAN TUTORIAL WITH LIBERTY LONDON | OOTD!,’ and ‘AIRPORT SECURITY DON’T BELIEVE I’M BRITISH’ are some of her most popular videos. There are now over 813 thousand subscribers to the channel.
Dina and her husband also have a collaborative channel. More than 374 thousand people have subscribed to the channel. Dina Tokio Vlogs’ daily vlogs can be found on her vlog channel. Over 115 thousand people have subscribed to the vlog channel. Dina has over a million Instagram followers as a result of her ‘Instagram’ posts.
Dina Torkia, her first clothing line, debuted in 2015. She and her husband spent a year developing the clothing line. They were required to travel to Indonesia to observe the manufacturing process. The launch was a huge success, and Dina’s debut collection sold out almost immediately. Her collection is available on her blogging website.
Dina’s debut book, ‘Modestly,’ was released in September 2018. Dina’s life experiences as a “hijabi” woman form the bulk of the book. The book also focuses on the lives and struggles of British Muslims.
Dina’s efforts to raise awareness of Muslim women’s issues have resulted in several awards. She was the subject of a ‘BBC’ documentary called ‘Muslim Miss World.’ YouTube named her a ‘Creator for Change’ in 2017. She was also featured in a series of videos on YouTube with the hashtag ‘#YourAverageMuslim.’ Dina was named one of ‘Vogue’s “New Suffragettes” in January 2018 for being one of the most influential and successful “hijabi” women and for her contribution to modernizing Muslim women.
