David Khari Webber Chappelle was born in Washington, D.C. to William David Chappelle and Yvonne.

He grew up in Silver Spring and attended Woodlin Elementary School. During his school days, he was greatly inspired by comedians Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy.

His parents divorced when he was a child. He graduated from Duke Ellington School of the Arts in 1991, where he majored in theatre arts.
